WASHINGTON – Ye-Sho Chen, director of the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business Emerging Markets Initiative and a professor in the Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences, was interviewed by the Voice of America for the recent article, “The Benefits of Alibaba, Baidu and eBay Competition in the Chinese Market,” which analyzed the international online market for competing companies, Alibaba Group, Baidu Inc. and eBay Inc.
In the VOA interview, Chen discussed Alibaba’s decision in June to implement a search engine to compare prices on the products of different companies. This one-stop shopping search engine allows companies to reach specific customers, and buyers are able to benefit because of its price-comparison feature, which allows them to purchase products for the lowest price.
“This is a very healthy competition because companies can compete and customers can get benefits. In terms of Internet users, this is good news,” Chen said in the interview. “The Chinese Internet market is also a positive influence because this healthy competition will lead to improved products and services, influencing the whole industry.”
Chen further explained that through the online search engine, entrepreneurs of small and medium companies have direct access to both customers and suppliers. In addition, the search engine provides information for entrepreneurs to target their specific target markets.
