BRC RESIDENT WINS SHELL OIL STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

    October 11, 2011

BATON ROUGE – Alexandra Burmester, a sophomore in the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business’ Department of Accounting and a resident of the Business Residential College, was awarded a scholarship by Shell Oil Co. to study abroad in London for a month this past summer.

Burmester participated in an essay contest in the spring, which was open to BRC residents. The topic of the essay was how studying abroad in a particular place would benefit a career in business. A week after submitting her essay, Burmester received a notice that she had been selected for the scholarship.

“Stepping out of my comfort zone to travel abroad for a month would be such a beneficial experience and would give me a chance to grow as an individual,” Burmester wrote in her application essay. “Because London is such a leading global city and financial center, it would be the ideal place for me to study abroad. This opportunity would allow me to interact with different kinds of people in unfamiliar situations, a skill that would certainly help me in my future career in business.”

In July, Burmester travelled to London, her destination of choice, where she took an English and British history course. During her trip, she stayed in a dormitory of the Imperial College London in Notting Hill.

“I’m very grateful for the scholarship opportunity I had to study in London. It gave me a whole new perspective on the world and all the great places out there,” Burmester said. “The city is so full of history, and I loved absolutely everything about it.”

Also while in London, Burmester won a ticket to attend the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two world premiere at Trafalgar Square, where she walked the red carpet before seeing the movie.

“I had a wonderful time studying abroad, by far the best experience of my life, and I would go back in a heartbeat,” Burmester said.”

The Business Residential College is a living-learning environment that brings the field of study into a residence hall. It is a community of the next generation of business leaders, sharing a facility where they will be assisted in acclimating to the college and the culture of business.
